Why do we need to rescuscitate a person? How does CPR work?
For life to continue, the body requires an adequate supply of oxygen to enter the lungs and be transferred to all cells in the body through the blood stream. In particular, if the brain, the organ that controls all bodily functions, does not have a constant supply of oxygen, it will begin to stop working or fail after a few minutes (3-4 min). Without oxygen, the person will lose consciousness, the heartbeat and breathing will cease resulting to death.
CPR works by breathing air into the victims lungs to provide oxygen to the blood and pressing on the chest to move oxygen-carrying blood through the body.
